2011 Tony Award Highlights and Winners List

Last night, at the 2011 Tony Awards annual ceremony, The Book of Mormon and War Horse were named Best Musical and Best Play. Neil Patrick Harris hosted the annual event, presented at the Beacon Theatre by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.

The Book of Mormon was the big winner last night, winning nine Tony Awards with War Horse following second at five Tonys, and the Normal Heart and Anything Goes following third with three Tony awards each. War Horse received awards for Best Play, Direction (Marianne Elliot and Tom Morris), Scenic Design (Scott Pask), Lighting Design (Paule Constable), and Sound Design (Christopher Shutt).

The Normal Heart received the award for Best Revival of a Play, as well as awards for its Featured Actor (John Benjamin Hickey) and Actress (Ellen Barkin) while Anything Goes took home the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Choreography (Kathleen Marshall), and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musial (Sutton Foster). This is Sutton Foster’s second Tony award after her win in 2002 for Thoroughly Modern Millie.

The Book of Mormon having received 14 Tony nominations, lost in only five categories, including Best Actor in a Musical where Norbert Leo Butz won his second Tony award (the first was for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) for his portrayal as the FBI Agent Hanratty in the musical Catch Me If You Can. John Larroquette won the Featured Actor in a Musical Tony for his Broadway debut as boss J.B. Biggley in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Mark Rylance, who previously won a Tony Award winner for Boeing-Boeing, took home the Best Actor in a Play award for his sweaty, brash performance as former daredevil who spins tall tales in the celebrated three-hour character study Jerusalem by English playwright Jez Butterworth. In his acceptance speech, he quoted a poem by Louis Jenkins, an obscure poet from Minnesota, just as he did three years ago when he won for Boeing-Boeing. Frances McDormand grabbed the Best Leading Actress in a Play (Good People) award.
