Actors’ Equity Names ‘Newsies’ Ensemble 2012’s Outstanding Broadway Chorus

The cast of Disney‘s Tony-winning hit new musical Newsies will receive Actors’ Equity Association’s Advisory Committee on Chorus Affairs (ACCA) Sixth Annual ACCA Award for Outstanding Broadway Chorus. The honor is the only industry accolade of its kind and honors the distinctive talents and contributions made by the original chorus members of a Broadway musical.

The winners of the ACCA Award for Outstanding Broadway Chorus, all of whom were part of Newsies chorus on the musical’s March 29, 2012 opening night, are: Aaron Albano, Mark Aldrich, Tommy Bracco, John E. Brady, Ryan Breslin, Kevin Carolan, Caitlyn Caughell, Kyle Coffman, Mike Faist, Michael Fatica, Julie Foldesi, Garett Hawe, Thayne Jasperson, Evan Kasprzak, Jess LeProtto, Stuart Marland, Andy Richardson, Jack Scott, Ryan Steele, Brendon Stimson, Nick Sullivan, Ephraim M. Sykes, Laurie Veldheer, Alex Wong and Stuart Zagnit.

“This award acknowledges and honors the enormous talent and contributions members of a chorus make to a Broadway production,” said Equity Second Vice President and Chair of the ACCA Rebecca Kim Jordon. “The chorus members of Newsies are gifted professionals who exemplify the hard work, dedication and talent it takes to be outstanding in a Broadway musical.”

In reviewing the chorus of each Broadway production, the ACCA applied specific criteria to reach their decision. The ACCA considered the requirements made on each chorus by the director, the choreographer, and the musical director. They also considered the caliber of technical skill used to execute those requirements as well as the contributions made by the entire chorus to the overall production. All 12 Broadway chorus musicals that opened in the 2010-2011 season were eligible for the award.

Newsies Story

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘Newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies Newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right.

Newsies is inspired by the real-life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway Newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.

Newsies Awards

Since bursting onto Broadway last spring, Newsies set and then broke five Nederlander Theatre house records on its way to becoming the best selling new musical of the spring. The show received 23 major theatrical nominations – including eight Tony Award nods – and won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Score and Choreography. One of Broadway’s highest profile hits, it has been featured nationally on “The View,” “Good Morning America,” “Nightline,” “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” and “The 2012 Tony Awards.”

Production Credits

Newsies features a score with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, with a book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsies is directed by Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli.

Newsies Cast

The Broadway company of Newsies features Corey Cott as Jack Kelly, Ron Raines as Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay as Katherine Plumber, LaVon Fisher-Wilson as Medda Larkin, Ben Fankhauser as Davey, and Andrew Keenan-Bolger as Crutchie.

Newsies Performance Schedule

Newsies is currently playing at the Nederlander Theatre (208 W. 41st St. between Broadway and 8th) on Broadway.

Weekly performance schedule: Mondays at 7:30pm, Tuesdays at 7:30pm, Wednesdays at 2:00pm and 7:30pm, Fridays at 8:00pm, Saturdays at 2:00pm and 8:00pm, Sundays at 3:00pm

Based on the classic film about the real-life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," Newsies is a high-energy, crowd-pleasing new musical from Disney for your whole family featuring Alan Menken’s (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast) spectacular Tony-winning score.
