As we approach the midpoint of the 2012-13 Broadway season, longtime musical favorites continue to thrive across the Great White Way. Three of the top ten longest running plays in Broadway history are currently playing and a number of other musicals are slowly creeping up the list. Alongside the recent classics a crop of fresh new musicals and revivals is gearing up for spring openings.
The August Wilson Theatre hosts Jersey Boys, the story behind Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, for its eighth year, while Wicked—the untold story of the witches of Oz—is still a great family ticket as it enters its tenth year at the Gershwin Theatre.
The Lion King celebrated its fifteenth year on Broadway in October and its familiarity with young and old makes it an easy pick for family favorite.
The Phantom of the Opera and Chicago are Broadway’s longest running shows entering their 25th and 17th years respectively and despite their long runs, they carry on entertaining new and repeat audiences year in and year out.
Rock of Ages, a comically, light-hearted tribute to golden days of ‘Hair Rock’ with a soundtrack straight from your Camaro’s tape deck, is rounding out its fourth year at the Helen Hayes Theatre.
On the other end of the spectrum there’s Mamma Mia! with a soundtrack jammed pack with Abba’s greatest hits.
The 2012 Tony Award Champ, Once, is still going strong. Its beautiful love story and intriguing mix of characters and folk inspired music guarantees to appeal to a wide range of audiences. The 2012 runner up, Newsies, is also a great family ticket filled with spectacular dance numbers and an energetic, young cast.
The hot ticket in musical theatre is still The Book of Mormon which tells the story of two Mormon missionaries in the brilliantly irreverent fashion we have all come to expect from South Park creators, Tre Parker and Matt Stone.
Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark keeps dazzling audiences with its jaw dropping aerials at the Foxwood.
Revivals of Broadway classics like Cabaret and Pippin take the stage this season opposite exciting new musicals such as
Motown, Cyndi Lauper’s Kinky Boots, the highly anticipated London import Matilda, and the first Broadway staging of Rodgers and Hammersteins’ musical rendition of the classic Cinderella.
